Heart to Heart

Luke has been asking a lot of questions lately, especially about my father. We don’t say much about my father around here. There really isn’t much to say. But for whatever reason he feels compelled to ask a bunch of questions. I have no problem answering anything he asks because I have nothing to hide. Two days ago, out of the blue, we had the following conversation:

Luke: Mom you didn’t grow up with a Daddy?
Me: No Luke I did not.
Luke: Why not Mom?
Me: Because my Dad chose not to be part of my life.
Luke: Why did he do that?
Me: I don’t know.
Luke: Does he have another family then?
Me: Yes.
Luke: Oh, my Daddy didn’t choose to live with another family. He chose to live with me. I love my Dad.
Me: Yes Luke, you have a really great Dad.
Luke: So was he married to Grandma then?
Me: (squirming a little) No he was not.
Luke: So is that why he lives with another family?
Me: I don’t know Luke. But Luke when two people make a baby together, both people should take care of the baby.
Luke: Oh yeah. Babies are special.

This kid is only five and half. Tonight we had another conversation about heart break. It started with a discussion about how the heart works. We listened to each other’s chest for the sound of our heart beat. Then we had the following conversation:

Luke: Mom, Daddy’s heart broke when his Daddy went to heaven. He smoke cigarettes and ate junk food.
Me: Yes, Luke Daddy’s heart broke when that happened. We need to take really good care of our bodies because we only get one!
Luke: Cigarettes make smoke all over your lungs then you can’t breathe good!
Me: Yes, that’s right. We shouldn’t even try smoking ever because once you start a lot of times it’s really really hard to stop. Can you imagine how horrible it must be for those people who really want to stop but just can’t?
Luke: Yeah, how awful. My Dad doesn’t smoke cigarettes.
Me: Nope.
Luke: Your heart broke when your Daddy chose not to be part of your life? You must have had a bad life.
Me: Part of my heart was broken but, God knows what is best for me. He has a plan for all us. He knows what is best for you and me and Daddy and Wyatt. Sometimes God’s allows us to experience things that hurt our heart because we learn so much from those painful times. I trust God and His plan.
Luke: Really? Oh my heart is broken right now.
Me: Why Luke?
Luke: Because I miss my best buddy Evan. School ended and its been days and days and days since I got to play with him. I miss my friend a lot. My heart hurts.

This kid thinks deeply and loves deeply too. I am so blessed to be able to have these talks. It’s most certainly one of my favorite parts of being a Mom.

I should start counting the amount of times in one day that I say 'I dont know'. Kids ask the craziest questions, 'Mom, why is that car red'? 'Mom, why does that person like green'? 'Why do banana's taste like bananas'. Stuff that I just have no ansers for! Then they begin asking questions that I should have answers for but don't. Like, 'How far away is the sun'? Uhhh or 'Why does the earth spin'?

Kids will make you learn things you never knew you would need to know! =)

Mischief

This evening I took the boys to Macy’s hoping they’d behave long enough to purchase some dress pants for Jeff. I HOPED we would get what we needed and be on our merry way. Well, apparently I am an optimist. Despite the good behavior quiz before leaving our vehicle, Wyatt was still a little monster. Running through racks, running away, tackling his brother. Basically doing everything I instructed him not to do.

The final straw was when Wyatt tried to introduce himself to the mannequin. Every respectable introduction is accompanied by a handshake, right? Wyatt grabs the mannequin hand and gives it a good yank. Imagine the look of horror on my face when the hand goes sailing through the air! The boys were laughing hysterically. Even I couldn’t help myself. Did that just happen? I tried to cover up my smile. (Maybe they would buy into the gesture as astonishment, because we all know any self respecting mother wouldn’t encourage such antics. wink ) I stepped over to the chaos, tried to put the mannequins hand back on. By now Wyatt thought it was so funny he was attempting another amputation on the other side. Futile were my efforts at restoring calm. So, I left the hand on ground and hurried home.

As we were leaving, I was reading Wyatt the riot act. Some guy was within ear shot and listening to me list off all his misdeeds. When I got to the very last one, (hand removal) even he couldn’t help laughing out loud.

Lesson learned, Wyatt needs to remain locked in a stoller while we are in a store. Heaven only know what that child might devise now that he knows those fake people come apart, AND it’s really really funny!

Five Year Old Fashion

Luke cracks me up. Right now he is interested in wearing certain things. The other day he wanted to go to the store with me. He insisted on wearing a grey shirt, holie jeans, a blue and green vest, bright blue rain boots with red lizards all over em and black and white checker sunglasses. It was pouring down rain so the boots were very practical. Sunglasses however were more of fashion statement. =) I wish I would have taken a picture of his get up. He cared not about any sort of fashion trend but only what he liked. Why aren't we all so inclined to dress that way? And if only that would last through the teen years. =)

While we were out shopping Luke spotted a boys tie. With Jeffs new job, he is a shirt, coat and tie guy everyday. Luke wanting to emulate Daddy, insisted on this purchase. I relented. He chose a navy tie with green polka dots.

Last Friday was picture day. He pleaded with me to wear his shirt and tie. I didn't really think shirt and tie was appropriate play wear for preschool but, again it was important to him. So he went to school dressed in his best. I can't wait to get those pictures back. =)

Otoscope... One Rockin' Toy

The bad news first. Illness prevails in our home.... STILL. I thought we were done with Wyatts fever. He has been fever free for several days. Last night he woke up crying. When I pulled him out of bed he was burning up and shaking. I don't think it was a febrile seizure. It was more like a super bad case of the shivers. I attempted to take his temp but the dumb ear thermometer conked out. So, I am not sure of the actual fever number. But whats a number when you are a Mom. Mom's who have been on the job for a few years KNOW a mild fever from a rager just by touch. This one was a rager. After some Motrin and cooling off he was feeling better. Today he seems tired and the fever hasn't come back, yet.

The other bit of bad was I caught whatever funk is going around. The chills, sore throat and body aches welcomed me Saturday morning.

The good.. Jeff ran out to pick up a new thermometer and Motrin. While he was out he purchased an otoscope. We were playing with it for all of fifteen minutes before Luke starts calling out from bed 'Mooooommmmmm my ear hurts...' We turned the otoscope on him and sure enough it looked just like the picture. Boy do I wish we had plunked down the $14.00 years ago. I could have saved several trips to the doctor and many co-pays. Hmm, anyone want to do a return on investment calculation real quick? =)

Tomorrow will probably bring a trip to the doc for both boys. Who knows maybe I will even request a quick swab of my oral cavity for strep. =)

Chatter Tornado

First, let me begin by stating I am honored so many people want to share their every thought with me! What a blessing! I want to hear every word that tumbles from those precious mouths. But why must they all unload at the exact SAME TIME? Helloooo Guys, perhaps I can't hear a single word anyone is saying? It's like I am in the eye of a chatter tornado.

By attempting to hear everyone I heard no one! Ditching the standard polite nod, I found myself shouting over the noise (because that's what it becomes when there isn't an actual conversation happening) to take turn speaking. They looked stunned. Why is the obvious so shocking sometimes?

Bugs

Wyatt has a nasty bug coursing through his body. Poor kid. It started with a pesky cough Sunday night. 3:00AM rolls around and I am frightened out of bed by that horrid barking sound. I have met that 'bark' before and its never good. Only the last two times Luke was the host of such party.

I immediately began steam treatments aleternating with cold air exposure. They helped some but he was drooling a lot. That concerned me because I had never seen the drooling accompanied with the croup. He was also taking deep breaths. His skin color was normal and his temperament perked up after an hour of steam and cold. We chose to keep a watchful eye on him. What a restless night for me. I kept bouncing out of bed every half hour to make sure he was okay. I know, a bit neurotic. But I'd rather be tired than worried. Something about breathing troubles that rattle me.

The next day his bark subsided. Since Sunday he has been running fevers on and off. He keeps telling me his 'froat' hurts. That and his hiccups are hurting. (he means cough)

Oh the joys of Mommyhood. =) To top it off, when I picked Luke up from school today, there was a note in his cubby stating that he was exposed to strep throat this week. Fabulous. Let's see what the next few day hopefully don't bring!
